AI Search Audit

Understand how AI-powered search interprets, evidences and represents your brand

AI search does not give you a stable rankings table.

A response can change with the system, the question, the context, the sources available at that moment and the way the question is framed. Some answers include citations. Some do not. Some mention brands confidently and incorrectly. That is not a flaw you can solve with a weekly scorecard.

This is a senior-led AI Search Audit, sometimes described as an AI visibility audit, GEO audit or LLM visibility audit, focused on whether your business is clear, credible and well-evidenced enough to be considered when buyers use AI-powered search to compare options and validate decisions.

The useful question is not simply, “Did we appear?” It is whether there is enough clear and reliable information for an AI system to understand where your business fits and why it should be included.

Is an AI Search Audit the right place to start?

Before recommending an audit, I will tell you if AI search is not the real problem. Sometimes a Technical SEO Audit or broader Strategic SEO Consulting engagement is the more sensible investment.

25+ years’ experience

Senior SEO judgement across technical, strategic and international search work.

Independent assessment

No visibility platform, prompt tracker or predetermined solution to sell.

Direct senior delivery

The audit is carried out by me, not passed to a junior team or generated by a dashboard.

AI Search Audit vs AI visibility report

A visibility report can show what happened in a controlled set of prompts. That has some value. It is not strategy.

Counts mentions across a prompt setInvestigates why inclusion or exclusion happens
Produces a score or dashboardProduces priorities and a commercial roadmap
Treats prompts as the strategyStarts with real buyer questions and decisions
Automated and repeatableSenior-led and specific to your market
Shows outputs at a point in timeAssesses brand clarity, evidence, sources and competitive contrast

An AI visibility tool tells you what it observed. My audit asks the more useful questions behind the output: whether the brand is understood accurately, which buyer questions it is eligible to answer, why competitors are easier to retrieve or cite, and what should change first.

What the AI Search Audit is designed to uncover

Whether systems can make sense of your business

Is it clear what you do, who you serve, where you fit in the market and what you should be known for?

Whether claims are properly evidenced

Are important claims supported by useful pages, original research, proof points, reviews and credible third-party sources?

Where you are genuinely eligible to appear

Which comparison, evaluation, validation and category-choice questions have real commercial value and are plausibly winnable?

Why competitors are easier to use

Are competitors clearer, better evidenced or more consistently referenced even when their underlying offer is not better?

What I look at

Brand and entity clarity

How consistently the business is named, described and categorised across its own site and the wider web.

Buyer-intent coverage

Whether useful material exists for the questions people ask when comparing options, checking suitability or reducing risk.

Evidence and source strength

Whether key claims have enough supporting material to be found, interpreted and reused.

Competitive contrast

Where competitors are clearer, better evidenced or more consistently referenced, and whether that matters commercially.

The scope depends on the market and business model. This is broader than on-page SEO and more commercially grounded than a generic LLM visibility report.

What you will receive

The deliverable is designed to be used, not admired and forgotten.

Executive assessment

A clear view of how your brand is understood and where the material risks sit.

Buyer-question map

The commercially relevant comparisons, evaluations and validation questions worth concentrating on.

Evidence and competitor findings

Where claims, sources and category signals are weak and where competitors are easier to use.

Prioritised roadmap

Quick wins, structural work and longer-term opportunities separated from low-value noise.

Walkthrough

A direct discussion of the findings, trade-offs and what should happen next.

How the audit works

1. Map

Identify questions that reflect real evaluation behaviour, not a generic list of 100 prompts.

2. Assess

Sample relevant AI-search surfaces systematically while remaining honest about variation.

3. Trace

Investigate terminology, evidence, consistency, retrievability and external reinforcement.

4. Prioritise

Separate what to address first, what can wait and what is unlikely to justify the effort.

Recommendations may cover pages to consolidate or create, claims that need better proof, category language that needs tightening, comparison content, research or case evidence, third-party validation and technical work that makes important information easier to retrieve.

Typical findings

Inconsistent business descriptions

The organisation is described differently across important pages and external sources.

Competitors own comparison questions

They are easier to explain and retrieve, not necessarily better.

Unsupported marketing claims

Important claims exist, but the evidence needed to rely on them cannot be found.

Category language is unclear

Product or service terminology makes the business harder to categorise and compare.

Rankings conceal buyer-journey gaps

Conventional performance looks healthy while commercial decision-support content is missing.

Teams send conflicting signals

Content, brand, PR and SEO activity do not reinforce the same positioning or evidence.

Who this AI visibility audit is for

This is for established businesses and serious marketing teams that want to make better decisions about AI search.

It is a good fit if buyers may be encountering inaccurate descriptions of your business, competitors appear more often in comparisons, conventional rankings are stable but visibility is becoming less straightforward, or you need an experienced view before committing budget to another AI-search initiative.

It is not a good fit if you want a single score to track every week, a guarantee that you will appear in specific answers, or an automated report that can be generated with very little thought.

Those things are available elsewhere. They are just not especially useful on their own.

FAQs.

Can anyone guarantee rankings or mentions in ChatGPT?

No. AI-generated answers vary by system, context, available sources and phrasing. The audit identifies conditions you can improve; it does not pretend an unstable environment can be guaranteed.

Is an AI Search Audit different from SEO?

Yes, but they overlap. Technical accessibility, content structure, search demand and authority still matter. The audit adds brand interpretation, evidence, source strength and AI-mediated buyer journeys to that foundation.

Which AI search platforms do you assess?

The mix depends on where your customers search and what can be assessed responsibly. It may include ChatGPT, Google AI experiences, Perplexity and other relevant systems rather than a fixed platform checklist.

Is this the same as a GEO or LLM visibility audit?

The labels overlap. The important distinction is the method: this is a strategic assessment of buyer questions, evidence, sources and competitive eligibility, not an automated mention-counting report.

Can my internal team implement the recommendations?

Yes. The roadmap is intended to be usable by your team, agency or another specialist. Where helpful, I can remain involved through ongoing SEO management or strategic consulting.

What if AI search is not our main problem?

I will say so. If technical SEO, positioning or broader search strategy is the more sensible starting point, I would rather recommend that than sell you the wrong audit.

What happens after the audit

You can take the roadmap and implement it internally, with your agency or with another specialist.

Where it makes sense, I can stay involved to refine category narrative, improve content structure, build evidence assets, strengthen source material and challenge priorities as the market changes. The audit remains a defined piece of work. The purpose is clarity, not dependency.

Is an AI Search Audit the right investment?

An audit is useful when there is a real business question behind it. Perhaps the brand is being misrepresented. Perhaps competitors are becoming the default answer. Perhaps you have a lot of content but little confidence that it supports decisions buyers now make through AI-powered search.
